When the topic of men wearing Speedos / swim brief style swimsuits, or even skimpy swim thongs, comes up on chat sites such as Quora or Reddit, I often see comments along these lines:
"It's okay for men to wear a swim brief as long as they are in shape."
"As long as they have the body for it."
"Only if they are slim enough, nobody wants to see a guy who is out of shape with a big belly in one of those".
"If they look hot, then sure, otherwise save yourself the embarrassment."
These are all very subjective, body shaming comments! What do they even mean?
Being "in shape" can refer to a whole variety of things, from having muscles on top of your muscles, to actually being athletic enough to run a significant distance. Just because someone has a muscular body doesn't mean that they have the athletic endurance to run a marathon. The opposite is also true, just because someone can run a marathon doesn't mean they have a muscular body or the strength to lift weights. So which one is "in shape"?
I know a guy who goes running quite regularly to stay "in shape", yet he has quite a noticeable belly. He would not necessarily "look hot" in a skimpy swimsuit, yet he is in way better shape than most of us because he can run such a long distance.
Quite often, former football players tend to look chubby when they stop spending so much time on the field. They are still "in shape" but their bodies are not as primed as they were when they were active. As such, with regards to wearing a skimpy swimsuit, despite being a football player they might not "have the body for it". They might even have a belly despite being quite strong.
Being slim is also subjective because there is the swimmer's build type of slim, and the non-muscular type of slim. One might say that a non-muscular person, despite being slim, would not necessarily "look hot" in a skimpy swimsuit.
All of the comments are also based on how a person's body looks, which is a foolish standard to set for a swimsuit. People do not go swimming because of how they will look in their swimsuit, they're not headed out to be in a fashion show. People go swimming so that they can relax and have fun, or because they want to do laps in a pool. Therefore, why would it even be a requirement to "look hot" or to "have the body for it" just to wear a swimsuit in the first place?
A swimsuit is for swimming in, if you want someone to look hot for you go home and look at online porn or buy yourself a magazine! It's quite foolish and illogical to set the bar so high as to expect that every person that you see at the beach in a swimsuit would be sexually or physically attractive to you. That's just nonsensical wishful thinking.
These days I am not "in shape" as I have a noticeable tummy, yet that doesn't mean I shouldn't wear a style of swimsuit that would make me feel good about myself. Skimpy swimsuits such as a swim brief or a thong have a way of making you feel sexy despite what the current benchmark for sexy happens to be. They allow you to love yourself just the way you are. It also feels good wearing less clothing at the beach.
Besides, being attractive is quite subjective as well, I'm sure you've heard the expression "different strikes for different folks", which is very true. Some people fund chubby guys to be attractive, so just because I have a small belly doesn't mean that nobody will be admiring me in my sexy swimsuit.
People who judge others and put people down because of what someone's body looks like in a swimsuit are simply toxic and rude, and as such they're not worth listening to. Their opinions mean nothing.
